Strategos Gets Roman Civil Wars Update

MicroProse announced a major update for strategy game Strategos, featuring a new Roman Civil Wars narrative campaign called "Pharsalus," plus deployment improvements, new units, AI fixes, and UI upgrades now live on Steam. The update expands the tactical depth with historical scenarios for strategy enthusiasts.

The new "Pharsalus" campaign centers on the decisive Battle of Pharsalus in 48 BC, a pivotal moment in Caesar's Civil War. This conflict saw Julius Caesar's veteran, but outnumbered, legions confront the larger army of Pompey the Great, who was backed by a majority of the Roman Senate. The battle, fought in central Greece, effectively decided the future of the Roman Republic. Historically, Caesar's army consisted of around 24,000 troops, facing Pompey's force of approximately 57,000. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Caesar's tactical acumen and the experience of his legions led to a stunning victory. The update introduces new units to reflect this historical context, including veteran auxiliary spears, to allow players to recreate this famous underdog victory. The publisher, MicroProse, has a long and storied history with strategy games, co-founded by industry legend Sid Meier in 1982. The company was responsible for genre-defining classics like the original *Civilization* and *X-COM* series, known for their strategic depth, a legacy that *Strategos* aims to continue. The Roman Civil Wars update for *Strategos* is part of its early access development, where the game continues to expand. Beyond the new narrative campaign, the update includes specific gameplay tweaks, such as custom deployment positions for the Pharsalus battle and the addition of stakes as a new battlefield terrain type. It also brings improvements to the game's AI and user interface.
