Iridium Launches Next-Generation Global IoT Platform

Iridium Communications has launched the Iridium 9604, a new Internet of Things (IoT) platform. The company states the smaller, purpose-built device unifies satellite, cellular, and GNSS capabilities into a single unit. It is engineered for scalable, global IoT applications.

- Iridium's revenue from Commercial IoT services grew by 11% to $46.1 million in the fourth quarter of 2025 compared to the same period in the previous year, with IoT subscribers increasing by 6% to nearly 2 million. For the full year 2025, the company's total revenue rose 5% to $871.7 million, with growth primarily driven by the IoT market. - The company, headquartered in McLean, Virginia, is currently investing over $13 million to expand its headquarters in Fairfax County. This expansion is expected to be completed in March 2026 and will create 117 new jobs, increasing its Virginia-based workforce to nearly 400. - The service operates on Iridium's constellation of 66 active low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, which provides the only satellite network with 100% global coverage, including the polar regions. The company's next-generation satellites were launched by SpaceX between 2017 and 2019. - Iridium's CEO, Matt Desch, has stated the company is focusing on specialized market segments to differentiate its offerings from other satellite operators like Inmarsat and Starlink. - The company's customer base includes industries such as maritime, aviation, government and defense, public safety, utilities, oil and gas, mining, and transportation. In 2020, the Iridium constellation was certified for use in the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, ending a monopoly previously held by Inmarsat. - As of February 2026, Iridium Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: IRDM) projects its total service revenue for the full year to be flat or grow up to 2%. The company ended 2025 with a net income of $114.4 million.
