FPS Games Hit Golden Era
FPS shooters are in a "golden era" with Arc Raiders shining, Overwatch reviving, R6 massive updates, Rust's biggest patch, Deadlock potential, and Marathon upcoming. Bungie's "Marathon" FPS is running an official Server Slam event highlighting cross-platform play and online multiplayer focus.
The recent rebranding of Overwatch 2 back to simply "Overwatch" has coincided with a massive resurgence in its player base. The game saw its concurrent player count on Steam soar to over 100,000, a level not seen since its launch. This revival is attributed to the "Reign of Talon" season, which introduced five new heroes and a year-long story event, successfully recapturing player interest. Ubisoft's Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege has undergone its most significant transformation in its 10-year history with the "Siege X" update. This massive overhaul introduced a permanent 6v6 game mode called Dual Front, mixing attackers and defenders on the same team for the first time. The update also includes modernized versions of five classic maps and significant gameplay enhancements like improved rappel mechanics. Embark Studios' Arc Raiders is a free-to-play, third-person extraction shooter that pits players against both hostile ARC machines and other human players in a PvPvE environment. Players can venture onto the surface solo or in teams of up to three to scavenge for resources and upgrade their gear in an underground hub called Speranza. The game, built on Unreal Engine 5, was named Best Multiplayer Game at The Game Awards 2025. Facepunch Studios' Rust has seen major changes, including the "Meta Shift" patch in October 2025 that completely reworked the game's progression system by bringing back Blueprint Fragments. This update followed the "Wounded" patch, which improved the user interface during combat and added new features like chat emojis. A large naval update is also planned, promising modular boats and new ocean biomes. The upcoming game "Deadlock" is being developed by Valve, not Riot Games, and is a third-person, 6v6 hero-based MOBA. Leaks and official information reveal gameplay that blends elements of MOBAs and hero shooters, where teams aim to destroy the opposing team's "patron." The game has been in an invite-only state and has seen a peak concurrent player count of over 170,000. Bungie's revival of its classic Marathon series is a multiplayer-only extraction shooter set for release on March 5, 2026. This new installment is set 99 years after the original game on the planet Tau Ceti IV and focuses on PvP gameplay as players, known as "Runners," scavenge for loot. While a departure from the original's single-player focus, it shares the same complex lore and sci-fi universe.
