Travis Kelce May Leave Chiefs
Kansas City Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce is expected to play in 2026 but will likely explore opportunities with other teams as he enters free agency. This could create a major shakeup among NFL contenders, as the All-Pro tight end considers his options beyond the defending champions.
A departure would mark the end of an era for the Chiefs, who have built a dynasty around the connection between quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Kelce. Together, they have led the team to three Super Bowl victories in five seasons (LIV, LVII, LVIII). Kelce has been a member of the Chiefs since being drafted in the third round in 2013. Kelce holds numerous NFL records for a tight end, including the most receiving yards in a season (1,416). He also holds the record for the most consecutive seasons with over 1,000 receiving yards for a tight end, with seven such seasons. His consistent high-level performance has resulted in nine Pro Bowl selections and four first-team All-Pro honors. In April 2024, the Chiefs signed Kelce to a two-year, $34.25 million contract extension, which at the time made him the highest-paid tight end in the league. That deal included $17 million guaranteed for the 2024 season. The Chiefs' front office has been making moves to create salary cap flexibility for the 2026 season. This includes restructuring Patrick Mahomes' 10-year, $450 million contract for the fourth consecutive year. These financial decisions could impact the team's ability to offer Kelce a competitive contract. Should Kelce hit the open market, he would join a short list of legendary players who have changed teams late in their careers, a list that includes names like Tom Brady, Joe Montana, and Emmitt Smith. His availability would undoubtedly attract significant interest from contending teams looking to add a future Hall of Famer to their roster.
