Intercom Hits $100M in AI Revenue
Intercom is now at a $400M annual run rate, with an impressive $100M of that coming from its AI-powered features. The milestone positions the company as a potential first agentic application to test the public markets, providing a key benchmark for AI monetization.
Intercom's AI-powered chatbot, Fin, is on track to reach $100 million in revenue and is already resolving over a million conversations each week. This rapid adoption by 7,000 customers has been a significant driver of the company's re-acceleration. The success of Fin, which can now autonomously resolve 56% of customer conversations, has been a key factor in Intercom's growth. This AI-driven growth follows a period of stagnation for the company. Co-founder Eoghan McCabe returned as CEO in late 2022 to find the company facing five consecutive quarters of declining new annual recurring revenue, nearing zero growth. The launch of ChatGPT just a month after his return prompted a massive, "bet the company" investment of nearly $100 million into developing what would become Fin. The company's strategy shifted to an outcome-based pricing model, charging $0.99 per resolved ticket by its Fin AI agent. This move directly ties revenue to the value delivered by the AI, a significant departure from traditional SaaS per-seat pricing. This pricing strategy has been crucial in monetizing the efficiency gains from AI. Intercom's pivot has doubled its overall growth rate, positioning it in the top percentile of public software companies. The company's overall revenue is estimated to have hit $343 million in 2024, a 25% year-over-year increase, a significant re-acceleration from 10% growth in 2023. This turnaround highlights the potential for AI to not just enhance features but to fundamentally reshape a company's business model and growth trajectory.
