Nepal Bans Amateur Everest Climbers

Nepal announced a ban on amateur climbers attempting Mount Everest to curb the influx of "selfie-hunting influencers" and reduce overcrowding from the "extreme tourism" trend. Only experienced climbers will be permitted on the world's highest peak, with authorities hoping to prevent accidents and preserve the mountain's integrity.

- The new regulations require aspiring Everest climbers to prove they have previously summited at least one Nepalese peak above 7,000 meters. Additionally, all climbers must submit a recent health certificate and have comprehensive insurance covering rescue and medical treatment. - The 2023 climbing season was the deadliest in Everest's history, with 18 confirmed deaths. This occurred during a year when Nepal issued a record 478 climbing permits to foreigners for the spring season. - The permit fee for the popular spring climbing season was raised from $11,000 to $15,000 per person. This fee is just one part of the total cost for a climber, which can range from approximately $45,000 to over $76,000 depending on the guide service. - In addition to experience requirements, solo climbing is banned, and expeditions must maintain a ratio of at least one licensed Nepali guide for every two climbers on peaks above 8,000 meters. - Tourism related to Everest is a significant part of Nepal's economy; climbing fees generated $5.9 million in 2024, with Everest accounting for more than 75% of that revenue. - The new rules also target environmental pollution, enforcing a rule that requires each climber to bring down 8 kilograms of solid waste and, for the first time, mandating the use of special bags to carry out all human waste. - Despite the record number of permits in 2023, only about half of the climbers got an opportunity to attempt the summit, partly due to a viral illness at base camp and harsh weather conditions.
