Fremont Mayor Urges Support for Local Businesses
Fremont Mayor Raj Salwan urged residents to patronize local restaurants and small businesses. In a social media post, Salwan highlighted their importance to the city's vibrancy and economic success. He encouraged the community to support them to ensure their continued operation.
- Fremont is home to over 3,600 small businesses, which collectively employ more than 27,000 people. This means that one in every four jobs in the city is tied to a small business. - The city's economic development initiatives include an annual Restaurant Week, which in its most recent iteration attracted over 10,000 guests and boosted business for 95% of the 62 participating restaurants. - High operating costs, particularly rent, present a significant challenge for local establishments. In late 2023, three long-standing Fremont restaurants with a combined history of over 114 years closed their doors. - To further bolster the local dining scene, the city council has approved a mixed-use project at the Fremont Hub that has been nicknamed "Future Restaurant Row," with groundbreaking expected in the coming year. - Beyond retail and restaurants, Fremont has a large manufacturing sector with over 900 companies, making it the largest concentration of advanced manufacturers in the Bay Area. This sector provides nearly 60,000 jobs, accounting for more than one in every three jobs in the city. - The city's Economic Development Department actively partners with organizations like the California Manufacturers & Technology Association to support this sector and create workforce development programs with local schools, including Ohlone Community College and Tesla. - Mayor Salwan's broader vision is for Fremont to be one of the Bay Area's leading cities, alongside San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose, which involves significant investment in downtown development. Over $1 billion has been invested in new projects in the downtown area.
