Community Efforts Highlighted to Address Food Insecurity

A recent podcast highlighted the impact of community organizations like The Salvation Army in providing thousands of daily meals to those in need. While the specific segment focused on Michigan, it underscores the role of local efforts in addressing food insecurity. In Fremont, organizations such as the TCV Food Bank and Abode Services offer similar community support.

In Alameda County, Tri-City Volunteers (TCV) Food Bank stands as the largest client-direct food bank, distributing over 5 million pounds of food each year. With a dedicated force of more than 1,000 volunteers, TCV provides crucial food assistance to over 10,000 individuals monthly through its marketplace, mobile pantry, and bag lunch programs. TCV's innovative approach includes farmers' market-style distributions available on weekdays, where an average of 200 clients can select fresh produce and proteins. Their mobile pantries extend this reach, serving about 1,500 families weekly by meeting them in accessible locations like senior housing complexes. Abode Services, while focusing on ending homelessness, also plays a critical role in addressing food insecurity by providing meals and supportive housing. In its 2025 fiscal year, the organization assisted 18,090 people and helped 75% of them find permanent homes, a key step in ensuring consistent access to food. Their programs served over 12,000 households, which included more than 4,400 children and 4,300 seniors. Fremont residents have access to a variety of other local food resources. The Salaam Food Pantry, for instance, distributes 300 grocery bags of non-perishable items and fresh produce on the fourth Saturday of each month. Additionally, the Fremont Family Resource Center partners with TCV for a mobile food pantry twice a month and hosts other meal events. For those looking to stretch their grocery budgets, Fremont's farmers' markets offer programs to increase access to fresh, local food. The Irvington and Niles farmers' markets participate in CalFresh EBT and Market Match, which can provide extra money to purchase fruits and vegetables. Community involvement is vital to sustaining these efforts. Kids Against Hunger Fremont has engaged over 10,000 students and volunteers to pack more than one million meals. TCV Food Bank also relies on volunteers for packing and distribution, offering opportunities for those 14 and older to contribute.
