Microsoft Unveils AI-Powered Copilot Cowork
Microsoft announced the $99/month Microsoft 365 E7 “Frontier Suite,” launching May 1, featuring Power BI, Copilot AI, cybersecurity, and agent management. The suite includes Copilot Cowork, built with Anthropic’s AI, enabling autonomous AI agents that can manage workflows and prepare executive summaries. This signals a shift from AI as a reactive assistant to a proactive business partner, autonomously surfacing insights.
Microsoft's new E7 "Frontier Suite" aims to move beyond basic AI assistance, enabling AI to proactively manage workflows. The suite includes Agent 365, priced separately at $15 per user, designed to govern and secure AI agents across an organization. IDC predicts 1.3 billion agents will be in circulation by 2028, with 80% of Fortune 500 companies already utilizing them. Copilot Cowork, built with Anthropic’s Claude model, is now part of Microsoft 365 Copilot and will handle complex tasks across multiple Microsoft 365 apps. It can analyze a month's worth of meetings, compile customer notes, and generate competitive analyses with supporting documents. This integration marks the first direct inclusion of Anthropic's technology into Microsoft 365 Copilot. The E7 suite, generally available May 1, 2026, costs $99 per user per month and combines Microsoft 365 E5, Copilot, and Agent 365. It also includes the Microsoft Entra Suite and advanced security features from Defender, Intune, and Purview. Microsoft is positioning E7 as a cost-effective alternative to purchasing these services separately. Agent 365 gives IT and security teams a single place to oversee and protect AI agents, using existing infrastructure. Microsoft itself monitors over 500,000 agents internally, managing tasks from coding to HR. These internal agents generate 65,000 responses daily. Microsoft's collaboration with Anthropic signifies a shift toward model diversity, moving beyond its reliance on OpenAI. Anthropic's Claude models have been recognized for superior performance in Excel financial tasks and PowerPoint creation. Microsoft is integrating Anthropic models via Amazon Web Services (AWS). Copilot Cowork exemplifies this shift, enabling users to delegate tasks by describing desired outcomes. It then uses Work IQ to draw from emails, meetings, files, and data to create a plan of action. Users retain control, able to confirm progress, make changes, or pause execution. Microsoft 365 E7 is designed for organizations aiming to scale AI across the entire business, not just in isolated pilots. It combines the security and compliance foundation of E5 with an integrated AI stack. The suite facilitates a "human-led, agent-operated system" where AI takes action, rather than just generating content. Agent 365 incorporates Microsoft Purview for data governance, risk, and compliance, protecting sensitive information handled by AI agents. Microsoft Entra Agent ID assigns each AI agent a unique identity, and access privileges are limited to or below the level of the human user. This ensures that AI agents operate within established security and governance frameworks.
