Global Telcos Launch Open AI Platform

The GSMA, which represents mobile operators worldwide, has launched "Open Telco AI," an open platform to accelerate the development of secure, telecom-grade AI solutions. The initiative brings together carriers and vendors to collaborate on challenges like network optimization and security at scale.

The initiative is spearheaded by founding partners AT&T and AMD. AT&T is contributing a set of open telco-specific AI models, while AMD is providing the essential computing power for training and fine-tuning these systems through its GPU platforms. A significant gap exists between general AI capabilities and the specific needs of the telecommunications industry. Many advanced AI models struggle to accurately interpret network data and understand telecom standards, which limits their application in automating network operations. This performance gap is highlighted by the fact that only 16% of generative AI deployments in the telecom sector have been focused on network operations. The Open Telco AI platform aims to directly address this by creating AI models specifically trained for the complexities of telecom networks. The collaboration extends beyond the founding partners, with support from a wide range of industry players. Contributing partners include Huawei, KDDI, Nvidia, Orange, SK Telecom, and Swisscom. The initiative also has the backing of major operators like China Mobile, Deutsche Telekom, Telefónica, and Vodafone.
