Spain Withdraws Ambassador Amid Gaza Crisis

Amid escalating conflict, Spain has withdrawn its ambassador to Israel in protest over the humanitarian toll in Gaza reported.

The Spanish embassy in Tel Aviv will now be led by a charge d'affaires, reducing diplomatic representation between the two countries. This follows Spain's Foreign Ministry confirming the withdrawal of their ambassador, Ana Maria Salomon Perez. This action reflects Spain's strong criticism of Israel's military actions in Gaza and its recent strikes on Iran. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has been a vocal opponent of the conflict, even refusing to allow the U.S. to use Spanish military bases for operations linked to the strikes. Spain's relationship with Israel has been deteriorating since Israel's military campaign in Gaza began in late 2023. In 2024, Spain formally recognized a Palestinian state, which led to Israel recalling its ambassador from Madrid. In addition to diplomatic measures, Spain has also taken economic steps, including banning ships and aircraft carrying weapons to Israel from using Spanish ports and airspace. They have also approved a bill establishing an arms embargo against Israel, which includes banning the sale of weapons, technology and military equipment.
