ONDC Onboards First Fair Price Shops
India’s Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) has integrated its first fair price shops, which traditionally distribute government food rations. This move marks a significant expansion of the network's goal to democratize e-commerce by bringing physical, government-affiliated retailers in rural and semi-urban areas into the digital ecosystem.
- The initial pilot program was launched in Himachal Pradesh, specifically onboarding 11 Fair Price Shops (FPS) across the districts of Una and Hamirpur. - This initiative allows FPS dealers to sell goods other than government-subsidized rations, increasing their income potential and enabling them to compete with larger retailers and e-commerce platforms. - The Department of Food and Public Distribution is funding the pilot, with MicroSave Consulting providing hand-holding support to the shops and nStore acting as the technology partner. - Beyond their traditional role, FPS dealers can now also assist beneficiaries who have difficulty with online shopping by placing orders on their behalf through the ONDC network. - Consumers can purchase household groceries and other essential items from these onboarded fair price shops using existing ONDC buyer apps, such as Paytm. - This Himachal Pradesh project is designed to serve as a model for a future statewide and, eventually, nationwide expansion, aiming to digitize the entire public distribution system. - The move is part of a larger government effort to transform Fair Price Shops, giving them greater visibility in the digital marketplace and access to a wider customer base beyond ration card holders.
