TCL Unveils New 'Eye-Comfort' Display Tech

At MWC Barcelona, TCL announced a major advancement for its NXTPAPER eye-care technology, integrating it with AMOLED displays for the first time. The new tech, featured in the TCL NXTPAPER 70 Pro, aims to combine the visual comfort of e-paper with the vibrant colors of AMOLED.

This move into advanced mobile displays comes as TCL solidifies its dominance in the television market. The company is the world's second-largest TV manufacturer and has been strategically acquiring LCD production facilities from rivals like Samsung and LG Display. This vertical integration through its CSOT subsidiary gives TCL significant control over its display technology pipeline. TCL's focus on display technology is a significant revenue driver. In the first half of 2024, the company's semiconductor display segment alone generated approximately $7 billion, a 40.4% increase from the previous year. This financial strength fuels its R&D in new areas like the NXTPAPER-AMOLED integration. The underlying technology, for now called "Natural Light," achieves its paper-like effect through several hardware-level innovations. It uses a 90% circular polarization rate to dramatically cut down on glare. The system also features advanced blue light purification and automatically adjusts screen brightness and color temperature based on ambient light to better align with the user's circadian rhythm. The TCL NXTPAPER 70 Pro is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 7300 processor and includes a 5200mAh battery. The device is expected to launch in North America, Europe, and other global markets with a starting price in Europe of €339 (roughly $400) for the 256GB model. Unlike software-based "night modes" that simply apply a warm color overlay, TCL's NXTPAPER is a hardware solution that reduces harmful blue light at the source and uses a matte finish to diffuse reflections. This approach aims to lessen eye strain without the significant color distortion common with software filters. This mobile launch is part of a broader screen strategy for TCL, which has already captured the top global market share for TVs 85 inches and larger (22.1%) and for the growing Mini LED TV segment (28.8%). The NXTPAPER line extends this display expertise from the living room to the palm of your hand.
