New AI Aims to Fix Ocean Shipping Disruptions
Logistics tech firm project44 has launched an “AI Ocean Exceptions Agent” to autonomously resolve disruptions from "rolled containers" in global shipping. The tool uses AI to detect, diagnose, and re-route delayed shipments in real-time, targeting a major pain point in maritime logistics.
A "rolled" container, one that fails to load onto its scheduled vessel, is a pervasive issue in global trade. The problem is widespread; at the end of 2021, the global container rollover rate surged to 45%, impacting supply chains worldwide. The causes for these disruptions are varied and complex. Carriers often overbook space on vessels to compensate for potential cancellations, leading to bumped cargo. Other common reasons include vessels skipping ports to maintain tight schedules, high port congestion, and incorrect or incomplete shipping documentation. The financial and logistical fallout from a rolled container can be significant. Shippers not only face delays but can also incur steep demurrage and port storage charges. If the shipper is deemed at fault, the cost to rebook the freight can exceed the price of the original shipment.
