Pitching Prospect Thomas Harrington Debuts

Highly touted pitching prospect Thomas Harrington made his major league debut for the Pittsburgh Pirates. His arrival is seen as a hopeful moment for the team, which is looking to bolster its pitching rotation.

Thomas Harrington was selected by the Pirates as the 36th overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft, signing for a bonus of $2,050,000. His high draft selection came after a standout collegiate career that began with him joining Campbell University's baseball team as a walk-on. At Campbell, Harrington blossomed from an unrecruited high school player into a star. In his sophomore season, he was named the Big South Pitcher of the Year and a unanimous all-American, posting a 12-2 record with a 2.53 ERA. He also set a program record with 111 strikeouts while issuing only 18 walks over 92.2 innings. He carried that success into the minor leagues, earning accolades such as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Month for July 2024. Across three minor league levels in 2024, he compiled a 2.61 ERA with 115 strikeouts and just 19 walks, demonstrating the control that made him a top prospect. In his major league debut on April 1, 2025, against the Tampa Bay Rays, Harrington had a difficult outing. He pitched four innings, allowing six earned runs on seven hits and four walks, which was an uncharacteristically high number for him. Harrington joins a Pirates team looking to solidify its starting rotation behind established arms like Paul Skenes and Mitch Keller. He is one of several young pitchers competing for a permanent spot as the organization builds on its pitching depth.
