Shenzhen Design Week opens April 27 at the Longgang International Arts Centre, putting one of China’s biggest design hubs on display for 10 days. (macaonews.org) The 2026 edition runs through May 6 and includes exhibitions, talks, conferences and the Kunpeng Global Design Awards ceremony. Organizers say the awards drew nearly 6,300 submissions from 20 countries and territories. (macaonews.org) The program also includes a Global City of Design Roundtable Dialogue, a Global Designers Conference and five industry matchmaking conferences. A Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Macao Digital Design Tri-city Exhibition and container-based installations under the Design ABC Plan are scheduled at the main venue. (macaonews.org) Shenzhen has used design week as part of a broader city-branding push that links culture to manufacturing, technology and urban planning. China Daily reported that city officials launched a three-year action plan in 2023 aimed at building Shenzhen into a stronger “City of Design.” (chinadaily.com.cn) That push builds on an older designation. Shenzhen government materials say the city joined the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization Creative Cities Network as a City of Design in 2008, the first city in China to do so. (sz.gov.cn) The event itself is now a recurring fixture. World Design Weeks says Shenzhen Design Week was founded in 2017 and is hosted by the Shenzhen Municipal Government. (worlddesignweeks.org) Last year’s edition showed the scale Shenzhen is chasing. The official Shenzhen Design Week site says the 2024 event drew more than 300,000 visitors, with participants from 18 countries and regions and a “4+23+N” format built around main, branch and satellite venues. (sz.design) This year’s guest list points to the same international pitch. Macao News reported confirmed participants from the United States, Canada, Singapore, South Korea, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines, along with delegates from Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan and Chongqing. (macaonews.org) Another signal is a planned cooperation agreement with the London Design Festival. Macao News reported the deal is intended to support the global expansion of the Shenzhen design brand. (macaonews.org) For visitors tracking the Pearl River Delta’s design economy, the week offers a concentrated look at how Shenzhen wants to connect industrial design, city promotion and cross-border cultural exchange in one venue.
