UK Adventure Center Promotes Screen-Free Thrills
UK's Avon Tyrrell is promoting high ropes, archery, obstacle courses, and tree top trails for screen-free thrills and outdoor adventure experiences. The facility emphasizes getting people away from digital distractions and into physical challenges that build confidence and provide natural adrenaline rushes.
The Avon Tyrrell centre is operated by the national charity UK Youth, which was founded in 1911. Set on a 65-acre estate in the New Forest National Park, the site includes a Grade I listed manor house that was opened as an outdoor learning center by the then-Princess Elizabeth in 1949. The historic main building is a "calendar house," designed with 365 windows, 52 rooms, 12 chimneys, 7 exterior doors, and 4 wings, representing the days, weeks, months, days of the week, and seasons of the year. Built in 1891, it was funded by the winnings from an audacious Grand National bet in 1882, where the owner, Lord Manners, also trained and rode the winning horse. During World War I, the house served as a convalescent home for injured officers, and in World War II it was requisitioned by the army as an intelligence post and hospital. In 1946, the Manners family placed the house and grounds into a trust for the "Youth of the Nation," leading to its current use. The center's focus on "screen-free" activities aligns with research highlighting the developmental benefits of outdoor play, which can improve creativity, confidence, and social skills while reducing stress and anxiety. Studies have shown that excessive screen time can be linked to shorter attention spans and sleep disturbances in children. Beyond the activities mentioned, Avon Tyrrell offers a wide array of options like zip-wiring across a lake, kayaking, a bouldering wall, and bushcraft survival skills. They also run specialized team-building scenarios, such as a simulated plane crash where groups must work together to survive and achieve rescue. UK Youth, the operating charity, reaches over four million young people through its network of more than 9,000 youth organizations. Avon Tyrrell is a key part of its mission to equip young people to thrive through programs focused on outdoor learning, mental health, and employability.
