Info Edge Launches ₹250 Cr Fund
Indian internet conglomerate Info Edge has committed ₹250 crore to its new B8 Fund I. The fund will target growth-stage tech startups, signaling strong institutional confidence in digital platforms focused on commerce, logistics, and SaaS for small businesses.
This new growth-stage fund from Info Edge signals a strategic focus on scaling proven business models, moving beyond the seed and early-stage bets that built their reputation with successes like Zomato and Policybazaar. The B8 Fund I is designed to provide larger, more substantial capital injections, indicating a readiness to fuel the expansion of companies that have already found product-market fit and are poised for significant growth. For marketplaces, this points to an appetite for ventures that have demonstrated a clear ability to acquire and retain both vendors and customers. Info Edge's portfolio already contains key players in the e-commerce enablement space, most notably Shiprocket, a logistics platform that became a unicorn in 2022. Their experience with companies tackling the complexities of Indian logistics, especially for small businesses, suggests the new fund will likely target startups solving challenges in last-mile delivery and supply chain inefficiencies, which are critical hurdles for national expansion, particularly into Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. The expansion into Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities is no longer a secondary thought but the primary driver of e-commerce growth in India, with these markets now accounting for over 60% of all online transactions. Consumers in these cities are increasingly digitally fluent and aspirational, but their purchasing decisions are heavily influenced by vernacular content and video-led social media platforms. This underscores the need for vendor acquisition and demand generation strategies that are localized and resonate with regional consumer behavior, moving away from a one-size-fits-all metro-centric approach. Social and conversational commerce, particularly via WhatsApp, is a dominant trend in these emerging markets, serving as the primary online gateway for many small-town users and vendors. Info Edge has previously backed social commerce startups like BulBul, indicating an understanding of this space. The success of D2C brands leveraging WhatsApp for the entire funnel, from discovery to payment, highlights a significant opportunity for marketplaces to engage vendors and customers through personalized, real-time conversations, which builds trust more effectively than traditional e-commerce interfaces. The rise of the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) is set to further democratize e-commerce, offering a level playing field for small sellers and new platforms. This government-backed initiative aims to unbundle the e-commerce value chain, allowing startups to innovate in specific areas like seller onboarding or hyperlocal logistics. For a marketplace focused on artisans, ONDC could significantly lower entry barriers and expand reach, enabling sellers to be discoverable across multiple buyer-side apps. The artisan and handicraft sector, a key focus for marketplaces targeting unique local vendors, is receiving substantial government support through initiatives like the National Handicraft Development Programme (NHDP) and PM Vishwakarma Scheme. These programs aim to provide artisans with training, toolkits, and better market access. Understanding and integrating with these schemes can be a powerful vendor acquisition tool, demonstrating a commitment to the artisan community's growth and aligning with their aspirations.
