Raising Cane's Opens in Seattle's U-District
The fast-food chain Raising Cane's has opened a new location in Seattle's University District. The opening drew large crowds, with some customers reportedly lining up overnight for the restaurant, which is known for its chicken fingers and signature sauce.
- The Seattle restaurant, located at 4345 University Way NE, is the first in the city and one of only a handful in Washington state. - Founder Todd Graves first conceived of the chicken-finger-focused restaurant for a college business plan, for which he received a B-minus grade. Undeterred, Graves worked as a boilermaker and a commercial salmon fisherman in Alaska to raise the initial capital himself after being rejected by investors. - The chain is named after Graves' yellow Labrador, "Raising Cane." The original name was going to be "Sockeye's" to commemorate his time fishing in Alaska. - The first Raising Cane's opened on August 28, 1996, near the campus of Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. On opening night, the restaurant stayed open until 3:30 a.m. to meet customer demand. - The company has pursued an aggressive growth strategy, opening nearly 100 new restaurants in 2025 with plans for a similar number in 2026. Its long-term goal is to operate more than 1,600 locations in the U.S. and become a top 10 restaurant brand. - The menu is famously simple, centering on chicken fingers, crinkle-cut fries, Texas toast, and coleslaw. The recipe for the signature Cane's Sauce is a secret, but is rumored to contain mayonnaise, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and black pepper. - The new University District location was projected to create over 100 local jobs. For the grand opening, the company gave away free Raising Cane's for a year to 20 customers.
