Milwaukee Chefs Named James Beard Semifinalists

Milwaukee's food scene is gaining national attention—six chefs, restaurants, and bars were named James Beard Award semifinalists for the first time. This highlights the growing recognition of regional cuisine, similar to California's vibrant food scene. Could this inspire exploring local, chef-driven restaurants?

Milwaukee has a strong showing in the 2026 James Beard Award semifinalist list, with six area chefs and establishments making the cut. Vanessa Rose of Mother's is up for the Emerging Chef award, while 1033 Omakase vies for Best New Restaurant. The Mothership is a semifinalist for Outstanding Bar. Zak Baker from Ca'Lucchenzo in Wauwatosa, along with Lisa Kirkpatrick and Paul Zerkel of Goodkind in Milwaukee, are competing for Best Chef: Midwest. Finalists will be revealed on March 31st, and the winners will be honored at a ceremony in Chicago on June 15th. Being named a semifinalist can significantly boost a restaurant's visibility and covers. The James Beard Awards, often called the "Oscars of food," have recognized culinary excellence since 1991. The James Beard Foundation has been adjusting its regional award system to give chefs in overlooked states a fairer shot at recognition. Previously, the country was divided into ten regions, but now there are twelve. This gives regional cuisines a chance to shine. Milwaukee chefs have a history with the awards; Justin Aprahamian of Sanford won Best Chef: Midwest in 2014. Dane Baldwin of The Diplomat won the same award in 2022. Adam Siegel of Lake Park Bistro also previously won a James Beard award. The awards consider chefs' culinary skills, leadership, and efforts to create sustainable work cultures. The James Beard Foundation also hands out America's Classics Awards to long-running restaurants with timeless appeal and community impact; Solly's Grille in Milwaukee won this award in 2022. Milwaukee's food scene is gaining national recognition, with Eater naming it one of the hottest dining cities in 2024. The city was also a filming site for an upcoming season of Bravo's "Top Chef".
