Switch 2 may need newer microSD cards

Nintendo’s Switch 2 appears to require newer microSD standards for expanded storage, meaning many older SD cards could be incompatible because the company is prioritizing faster read/write speeds (giga.de). That’s a practical buying warning for anyone planning to expand console storage at launch — check card speed ratings rather than just capacity (giga.de).

Nintendo’s Switch 2 does not use the same expansion cards as the original Switch: it only works with microSD Express cards. (nintendo.com) Nintendo says the newer card standard is required for “faster access speeds” so games run smoothly on the new system. The company’s U.S. store listing for the console says the Switch 2 has 256 gigabytes of internal storage and expands with microSD Express cards sold separately. (nintendo.com 1) (nintendo.com 2) A microSD card is the tiny removable storage chip many Switch owners already use. MicroSD Express is a newer version that uses a faster connection method, and the SD Association says the format was introduced with speeds up to 985 megabytes per second and later updated to reach 1,969 megabytes per second. (sdcard.org) Nintendo’s support pages say a standard microSD card from an older Switch can still be inserted into a Switch 2, but it cannot be used to save or load digital games or save data. Nintendo says those older cards can only be used to import screenshots and videos. (nintendo.com 1) (nintendo.com 2) That changes the upgrade math for people moving from a 2017-era Switch, because capacity alone no longer tells you whether a card will work. A 512 gigabyte or 1 terabyte card bought for the first Switch may still be the wrong product for the Switch 2 if it is not marked microSD Express. (nintendo.com 1) (nintendo.com 2) Nintendo has already started selling licensed options, including a Samsung 256 gigabyte microSD Express card for Switch 2 performance and compatibility. The console itself launched on June 5, 2025, according to Nintendo’s product page. (nintendo.com) (nintendo.com) The practical check before buying storage is the label, not just the number on the box. If it does not say microSD Express, Nintendo says it is not compatible for Switch 2 game storage. (nintendo.com)
