Spanish Town Challenges Marbella's Crown

A stylish Spanish seaside town is being touted as a better-value alternative to Marbella, offering sophisticated bars and authentic Andalusian charm with short breaks from £260. The destination provides both relaxation and vibrant local culture at more affordable prices. It's attracting travelers seeking Spanish coastal luxury without Marbella's premium price tag.

The town in question, Estepona, has earned the nickname "the Garden of the Costa del Sol." This is the result of a major urban regeneration project that involved pedestrianizing more than 130 streets and adorning the historic center's whitewashed walls with thousands of colorful flower pots. Just a 25-minute drive from Marbella, Estepona offers a more affordable cost of living. For example, monthly expenses for a couple are estimated to be between €2,000 to €2,500, compared to €2,500 to €3,000 in Marbella. Property is also more accessible, with the average price per square meter at around €3,200 versus Marbella's €5,000. Beyond its floral displays, Estepona has transformed itself into an open-air art gallery. The "Ruta de los Murales" (Route of Artistic Murals) features over 60 large-scale artworks painted on building facades throughout the town, turning a simple walk into a cultural tour. This was a deliberate initiative to revitalize forgotten neighborhoods. A key attraction is the Orchidarium of Estepona, which houses one of Europe's largest collections of orchids with over 1,300 species. The facility is contained within three striking glass domes, the tallest of which is 30 meters high, creating a lush, indoor rainforest environment complete with a 17-meter waterfall. The town's commitment to pedestrian-friendly spaces is central to its appeal. A major project converted the old N-340 coastal road into a nearly two-kilometer-long boulevard, creating one of Spain's largest seaside promenades and connecting the urban core directly to the Mediterranean Sea. Estepona boasts 21 kilometers of coastline with 17 different beaches, including the popular Playa de la Rada and the sheltered, family-friendly Playa del Cristo. For nature lovers, the nearby Sierra Bermeja natural park offers numerous hiking trails with views of the Mediterranean.
