Largest U.S. Asian Supermarket to Open in Fremont
A prominent Asian supermarket chain is set to open its largest U.S. store right in Fremont. The new location will feature a massive selection of Asian groceries, produce, and specialty items, catering to the city's diverse community and expanding its retail options.
The prominent Korean-American supermarket chain H Mart is behind the new store, which will be located in the Pacific Commons Shopping Center. This marks the company's largest investment in its history and will be its biggest location in the United States. Construction on the 100,000-square-foot, two-story market is slated to begin in late 2026. The new flagship store will feature a multi-level design that includes a food hall with fast-casual and sit-down restaurants, a bar, and entertainment options. This "immersive destination" aims to go beyond a traditional grocery store, creating a community gathering space for food lovers. H Mart President Brian Kwon stated the goal is to provide a convenient "one-stop shopping" experience for the Fremont community. This will be H Mart's first store in Fremont, joining other Bay Area locations in San Francisco, San Jose, and Dublin. The chain, which started as a small Korean corner store in Queens, New York, in 1982, now operates over 100 stores across the U.S., Canada, and the United Kingdom. The store will occupy the space of a former Kohl's at the intersection of Bunche Drive and Interstate 880. Pacific Commons is one of the largest retail centers in Silicon Valley and already houses major retailers like Target, Costco, Nordstrom Rack, and T.J. Maxx. Fremont's demographics make it a strategic location for the new supermarket. The city is the fourth most populous in the Bay Area, with a significant Asian population. In 2023, residents of Asian descent made up 62.4% of the city's population.
