Jean-Georges' Tin Building Food Hall Closes

The Tin Building, a large food hall in New York's Seaport district operated by celebrity chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, has closed. The closure follows reports of ongoing financial difficulties and workforce issues at the high-profile culinary destination.

The ambitious 53,000-square-foot culinary destination was a nearly $200 million venture that opened in September 2022. The project was spearheaded by The Howard Hughes Corporation, which has invested over $789 million in the Seaport area, including the revitalization of Pier 17. The food hall was losing over $100,000 a day, accumulating a total loss of over $83 million for its parent company, Seaport Entertainment Group. This financial strain was a significant factor in its closure after less than a four-year run. Workforce issues also plagued the establishment. In late 2024, over 100 employees, primarily Latino kitchen and custodial staff, were laid off following a "surprise check" of identity and employment authorization. This occurred as the food hall was already facing significant financial difficulties. The Tin Building featured an extensive array of options, including six full-service restaurants, six fast-casual counters, and four bars. Despite the variety, Jean-Georges Vongerichten stated that while the restaurants were performing well, the market section suffered from a lack of foot traffic. The historic building, originally constructed in 1907 as the Fulton Fish Market, underwent a massive reconstruction. It was moved 32 feet to the east and raised six feet to position it above the 100-year floodplain, a lesson from the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The space will not remain vacant for long. Seaport Entertainment Group has announced that the location will become the U.S. flagship for the Balloon Museum, an immersive art experience, which is expected to open in the summer of 2026. There are discussions about potentially relocating some of the more popular eateries, like House of the Red Pearl and T. Brasserie, to other locations within the Seaport.
