OpenAI Launches Major India Expansion
OpenAI has unveiled a broad initiative to establish India as a global AI hub, which CEO Sam Altman is calling an "OpenAI for India" campaign. The company is partnering with Tata Group and TCS to build a 100MW AI data center with plans to scale to 1GW. OpenAI will also open new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru and is partnering with six premier universities to provide ChatGPT Edu access to over 100,000 students and faculty.
- India has become OpenAI's second-largest market after the US, with more than 100 million weekly active users of ChatGPT. - The six universities partnering on the ChatGPT Edu initiative are IIT Delhi, IIM Ahmedabad, AIIMS New Delhi, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES), and Pearl Academy. - Beyond infrastructure, the partnership will see Tata Group deploy ChatGPT Enterprise to its employees, starting with hundreds of thousands of staff at TCS, which will also use OpenAI's Codex tool to improve software development. - The collaboration includes a social impact goal, with the OpenAI Foundation and TCS planning to provide AI training and resources to at least one million young people in India to improve their livelihoods. - The AI data center will be developed by TCS's HyperVault unit, which focuses on building green-energy-powered infrastructure specifically designed for high-density, liquid-cooled AI workloads. - As part of the skilling initiative, TCS will become the first organization outside of the United States to take part in OpenAI's certification programs for professionals. - The announcements were made at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi, which was attended by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and other senior executives from the company. - OpenAI is also collaborating with Indian ed-tech platforms, including PhysicsWallah, upGrad, and HCL GUVI, to launch courses on AI fundamentals for students and professionals.
