Fatal Incident Escalates US-Cuba Tensions
Diplomatic tensions between the U.S. and Cuba have risen after a deadly maritime incident in Cuban territorial waters. Cuba’s Ministry of the Interior reported that four people were killed after a U.S.-registered boat violated its maritime boundaries. A Cuban border guard commander and six passengers on the vessel were also injured.
The boat at the center of the deadly confrontation was a 24-foot Pro-Line vessel reported stolen from a home in Big Pine Key, Florida. The owner told the Monroe County Sheriff's Office he was alerted to the theft when he started receiving calls from the media about the shooting in Cuba, recognizing his boat's registration number, FL7726SH, in news reports. Cuba's Interior Ministry alleges the 10 people aboard the speedboat were armed with assault rifles, handguns, Molotov cocktails, and other military-style gear. Havana claims the group opened fire on a Cuban Border Guard patrol when approached, injuring the commander of the Cuban vessel. Cuban authorities stated the individuals were attempting to "carry out an infiltration for terrorist purposes." U.S. officials have confirmed that at least one American citizen was among the four killed, and another U.S. citizen was among the six arrested. The deceased American has been identified as Michael Ortega Casanova. His brother stated that Casanova, a U.S. resident for over 20 years, had an "obsessive and diabolical" quest to see Cuba's communist government fall. The Cuban government has named several of the individuals it took into custody, alleging some have a history of criminal activity and were wanted in connection with "acts of terrorism." Authorities in Havana also announced the arrest of another man on Cuban soil, who they claim confessed to being sent from the U.S. to coordinate the group's arrival. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the shootout as "highly unusual," and emphasized that no U.S. government personnel were involved. He stated that Washington will not rely on Cuba's account and that the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Coast Guard are conducting their own investigation to independently verify the facts. The incident occurs against a backdrop of already high tensions, following a U.S. military operation that captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, a key Cuban ally, in January 2026. The U.S. has also recently tightened economic sanctions, deepening an energy crisis on the island.
