Tesla Shifts FSD to Subscription-Only

Tesla has ended the option for an outright purchase of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software in North America, moving to a $99 per month subscription model. The change eliminates the previous one-time purchase option, signaling a broader industry shift toward features-as-a-service. Concurrently, a limited rollout of FSD version 14.2.2.5 has begun for vehicles equipped with the latest AI hardware.

- The prior one-time purchase price for Full Self-Driving (FSD) fluctuated significantly, peaking at $15,000 in September 2022 before being reduced to $8,000 in April 2024. The subscription was also halved from $199 to $99 per month around the same time. - The move to subscription-only is linked to CEO Elon Musk's compensation package, which includes a target of achieving 10 million active FSD subscriptions. This model shifts FSD from a promised "appreciating asset" to a software-as-a-service, potentially reducing Tesla's liability for delivering full, unsupervised autonomy. - The "latest AI hardware," known as Hardware 4 (or AI4), features higher resolution cameras (2896x1876 pixels for the front camera vs. 1280x960 in Hardware 3) and a more powerful FSD Computer 2 with a 20-core CPU. According to Tesla, Hardware 4 is three to eight times more powerful than Hardware 3. - FSD version 14.2.2.5, like the preceding v14.2.2.4, utilizes an upgraded neural network vision encoder with higher resolution. This improves the system's ability to detect and respond to emergency vehicles, hand gestures, and small road obstacles. - New features in the FSD v14.2 series include "Arrival Options" that let the driver choose a preferred parking type (e.g., parking lot, curbside) and adjustable speed profiles ranging from "SLOTH" to "MAD MAX". - All Tesla vehicles come standard with Basic Autopilot, which includes traffic-aware cruise control and autosteer. The now-discontinued Enhanced Autopilot package added features like Auto Lane Change, Navigate on Autopilot, Autopark, and Summon. - Competitors are entering the market with different hardware and pricing strategies. Rivian announced an "Autonomy+" package for $2,500 upfront or $50/month, which will utilize 11 cameras, radar, and LiDAR.
