Met Museum Eyes Twombly Retrospective

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is rumored to be planning the first U.S. retrospective of Cy Twombly in over 30 years [https://artnews.com/art-news/news/met-museum-cy-twombly-retrospective-1234776412].

The last major U.S. retrospective of Twombly's work was in 1994 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. A smaller show focusing on his photographs was mounted at the Menil Collection in Houston in 2010. If it happens, the Met's show would likely draw heavily from the Cy Twombly Foundation Collection. The foundation holds a vast archive of the artist's work. Twombly's work has soared in value since his death in 2011, making a comprehensive retrospective a major undertaking. His paintings now routinely fetch tens of millions of dollars at auction. The Met has not yet confirmed the exhibition, and details remain scarce. However, sources indicate that planning is well underway.
