Batona Trail Backpack Trip Announced

Rutgers organized a 2-night Batona Trail backpack covering 53 miles through New Jersey's Pine Barrens. The multi-day wilderness experience offers remote camping and hiking through one of the Northeast's largest undeveloped areas. The Pine Barrens provide rare opportunities for backcountry experiences within reach of major East Coast cities.

- The Batona Trail was created in 1961 by the Batona Hiking Club, with "Batona" being an acronym for "BAck TO NAture." It was conceived to provide New Jersey residents with an immersive wilderness experience. - The trail traverses the New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve, a 1.1-million-acre area recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. This region is the largest remaining expanse of the Atlantic coastal pine barrens ecosystem. - The Pine Barrens ecosystem is characterized by sandy, acidic, nutrient-poor soil and is home to unique plant life, including orchids and carnivorous plants. Many species, such as the rare pygmy pitch pines, are fire-dependent, requiring periodic fires to reproduce. - The trail passes through several historic sites and ghost towns, such as Batsto Village, a former bog iron and glassmaking center, and the Carranza Memorial, which marks the 1928 crash site of Mexican aviator Emilio Carranza. - The flat, sandy terrain of the Batona Trail presents minimal elevation gain, making it physically accessible but challenging due to its length. Backpackers typically complete the entire trail in 3 to 5 days. - The Pine Barrens protects the 17-trillion-gallon Kirkwood-Cohansey aquifer, which provides some of the purest drinking water in the United States. - The Rutgers GO Outdoors program, which organized this trip, aims to provide the university community with a variety of adventure-based activities, including hiking, backpacking, and kayaking, to foster a connection with nature. - The trail is maintained through a collaborative effort by the New Jersey State Park Service, the Outdoor Club of South Jersey, and the Batona Hiking Club.
