Oklahoma City’s Jalen Williams left Game 2 against Phoenix with a left hamstring injury, putting the Thunder’s playoff rotation under immediate strain. (espn.com) Williams got hurt with 6:26 left in the third quarter of Oklahoma City’s 120-107 win on Wednesday, April 22, after missing a contested fast-break layup, grabbing his left leg and heading to the locker room. Coach Mark Daigneault said after the game, “We think he aggravated his left hamstring.” (espn.com) Daigneault said the Thunder would evaluate Williams “in the next couple of days,” and ESPN reported he did not return after scoring 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting in 23 minutes. Oklahoma City takes a 2-0 series lead into Game 3 on Saturday in Phoenix. (espn.com) The timing hits a Thunder team that finished 64-18, the best record in the Western Conference, and opened the first round by beating the Suns 119-84 in Game 1 and 120-107 in Game 2. A healthy Williams has been one of the reasons Oklahoma City has looked deeper and faster than Phoenix through two games. (espn.com) (basketball-reference.com) Williams’ postseason had started at a high level: 22 points, seven rebounds and six assists in Game 1, then 19 points and four assists before exiting Game 2. Through two playoff games, he was averaging 20.5 points on 61.5% shooting. (espn.com 1) (espn.com 2) This is also not his first hamstring issue this season. ESPN reported Williams missed the first 19 games while recovering from wrist surgery and later missed extended time twice because of a right hamstring strain he aggravated on Feb. 11 against Phoenix. (espn.com) His regular season was still productive when he played: 17.1 points, 4.6 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game, according to ESPN. Those numbers help explain why any absence would force larger offensive roles onto Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder bench as the series shifts to the road. (espn.com) For now, Oklahoma City has a cushion on the scoreboard but not much clarity on Williams. The next update is expected before Game 3, when the Thunder will find out whether their 2-0 lead can hold without one of their top two-way players. (espn.com)
