A man accused of stealing a UPS truck in Fremont surrendered Thursday morning after a SWAT standoff that shut down a major intersection for hours. (kron4.com) Fremont police said the truck was spotted driving erratically around 1:30 a.m. on April 23 in the 5500 block of Cushing Parkway. The pursuit ended near Grimmer Boulevard and Auto Mall Parkway, close to an Interstate 880 onramp, after the truck became disabled. (kron4.com) Police said the driver stayed inside the truck and refused to come out while officers ringed the vehicle with guns drawn. Fremont’s Special Response Team, the department’s SWAT unit, is trained for barricaded-suspect calls and hostage negotiations, and it includes police officers, firefighters and dispatchers. (kron4.com) (fremontpolice.gov) The standoff ended at about 5:45 a.m., when police said the team breached the rear door and the suspect surrendered. Fremont police identified him as Rafael Taniguchi Garcia, 27, of Union City. (kron4.com) Garcia was arrested on suspicion of vehicle theft, reckless evading and obstructing a peace officer, according to police. KRON reported he was booked into Santa Rita Jail after he was medically cleared at a hospital. (kron4.com) Fremont police have not posted a public press release about the UPS truck case on the department’s news page as of April 24. The department’s published Special Response Team description says the unit trains year-round “to maximize the probability of a peaceful resolution” in critical incidents. (fremontpolice.gov 1) (fremontpolice.gov 2) The case follows another Fremont delivery-truck arrest in January 2025, when police said a suspect fled in a stolen truck before officers used de-escalation and less-lethal force to take him into custody. Thursday’s case also ended without a reported serious injury, but with another delivery vehicle immobilized in the middle of a Fremont road. (patch.com) (kron4.com)
