Google Workspace Intelligence updates
- Google updated Workspace Intelligence to draft Docs in your voice, auto-fill Sheets faster, and pull context from Gmail and Drive. - The changes are branded as turning AI into a semi-autonomous office intern that automates routine document and spreadsheet tasks. - Google's expansion pushes productivity suites toward process automation, increasing overlap with collaboration and agent platforms (techcrunch.com).
Google is pushing Workspace beyond writing help and into task automation, using a new system called Workspace Intelligence. (workspace.google.com) Google said on April 22 that Workspace Intelligence can pull context across Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Calendar, Chat and Drive, then use that information to help users complete work inside those apps. The announcement came at Google Cloud Next 2026. (workspace.google.com) In Docs, Google said Gemini can now draft and refine documents using material from a user’s files and messages, including writing that matches a person’s usual tone and style. In Sheets, Google said prompt-based filling can populate spreadsheets “9x faster” than manual entry and turn unstructured information into tables. (blog.google) (techcrunch.com) The underlying idea is simple: instead of asking an assistant one question at a time, Google wants the software to understand the work around the question. Google said Workspace Intelligence is built to track relationships among documents, emails, collaborators and ongoing projects in real time. (workspace.google.com) That puts Google closer to the “agentic” software now spreading across office tools, where artificial intelligence systems do multi-step jobs instead of just generating text. Google used that framing in its own announcement, saying the system is meant to power “agentic work.” (workspace.google.com) Google paired the update with new tools around it. TechCrunch reported that admins can control which data sources Workspace Intelligence can access, and Google separately announced Gmail AI Overviews for work accounts and new automation “skills” in Workspace Studio. (techcrunch.com 1) (techcrunch.com 2) (workspace.google.com) Google has been moving in this direction for months. On March 10, Google announced broader Gemini updates for Docs, Sheets, Slides and Drive, including drafting from Drive files and collaboration features for business users. (blog.google) The result is that Workspace is starting to overlap more directly with project software, internal search tools and dedicated agent platforms, because the same system now writes, retrieves context and executes routine office steps inside one suite. Google’s pitch is that the office assistant is no longer a sidebar feature, but part of the document itself. (workspace.google.com) (techcrunch.com)
