Saint Mary's Upsets #9 Gonzaga
Saint Mary's stunned No. 9 Gonzaga 70-59 to split the WCC regular-season title. Aidan Mahaney led all scorers with 23 points while the Gaels' defense held Gonzaga well below their season scoring average — a major upset that shakes up WCC Tournament seeding.
The victory for Saint Mary's marks their fourth consecutive season winning at least a share of the West Coast Conference regular-season title. This game, played at the University Credit Union Pavilion in Moraga, was the final regular-season meeting between the two schools as WCC rivals before Gonzaga moves to the Pac-12. Gonzaga entered the contest averaging over 84 points per game, ranking among the top offenses in the nation. The Gaels' defense, however, put on a dominant performance, becoming the first team all season to hold the potent Bulldogs' offense under 60 points. This win was Saint Mary's first over a top-10 ranked opponent since they defeated a top-ranked Gonzaga team in 2022. While Gonzaga leads the all-time series, the rivalry has been much more evenly matched in recent history, with the teams splitting their last 12 matchups heading into this game. With the regular season concluded, both teams now turn their attention to the WCC Tournament in Las Vegas. Despite the loss, Gonzaga secured the No. 1 seed through tiebreakers. Saint Mary's will enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed.
