AI video models worry Hollywood

Hyper‑realistic AI video models like ByteDance’s Seedance 2.0 are forcing Hollywood to reckon with new creative and rights challenges—talent and creators are increasingly vocal about the technology’s risks. Actors such as Nicola Coughlan have publicly criticized AI-generated performances as 'depressing,' spotlighting the cultural pushback producers need to factor into branded work. Seedance 2.0 generates synchronized audio and video from text, image or audio inputs and advertises multi‑shot storytelling with up to 2K output and phoneme‑accurate lip sync on its official product page. ByteDance confirmed a CapCut integration for Seedance 2.0 in a March rollout announcement, saying the model will be available inside its editing platform for creators. ByteDance and CapCut materials say the platform will include protections intended to block generation from real faces or unauthorized IP, language ByteDance has used while responding to studio complaints. Within days of Seedance’s initial release in China, viral clips—reported examples include a Tom Cruise vs. Brad Pitt fight and franchise‑style mashups—amassed millions of views and prompted studio outrage. The Motion Picture Association sent a cease‑and‑desist to ByteDance on Feb. 20, 2026 accusing Seedance 2.0 of “pervasive and widespread” use of studio material and demanding removal of studio works from training sets. SAG‑AFTRA publicly condemned Seedance 2.0 as enabling “blatant infringement” of performers’ voices and likenesses in mid‑February, joining the MPA in calling for immediate safeguards. U.S. Senators Marsha Blackburn and Peter Welch sent a bipartisan letter urging ByteDance to “immediately shut down” the Seedance app in mid‑March, citing threats to U.S. copyright law and creators’ livelihoods. Facing that legal and political pressure, ByteDance paused plans for a broader global rollout in March while its teams review safeguards and legal risk, a pause reported by multiple outlets.
