SFUSD Highlights Accessibility

San Francisco Unified School District announced ASL, closed captioning, and interpretation for their board meeting, signaling government requirements for public accessibility.

SFUSD's commitment to accessibility dates back to at least 1999, when a class action lawsuit was filed on behalf of students with mobility and visual disabilities. A settlement in 2004 mandated accessibility improvements at 100 schools, regular maintenance of accessible features, and ADA training. The district promotes equality for people with disabilities by ensuring its built environment aligns with federal and state accessibility guidelines. SFUSD has a procedure for handling complaints of alleged discrimination arising from a denial of physical access to a district program or activity. SFUSD provides accommodations to allow participation in remote meetings, including interpretation services. To request accommodations to participate remotely, individuals can call (415) 355-7364 at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled meeting. The district also provides childcare for families attending regular board meetings.
