Knott's Berry Farm Restores Bird Cage Theatre

The historic Bird Cage Theatre at Knott’s Berry Farm has undergone its first major renovation in 70 years. This makes it a refreshed option for families interested in California history and theme park fun.

Knott's Berry Farm's Bird Cage Theatre is a replica of the original Bird Cage Theatre in Tombstone, Arizona, which opened in 1881. Walter Knott, the founder of Knott's Berry Farm, was fascinated by the original theater's history and wanted to preserve it. He even considered moving the original building to his theme park, but it was designated a historic landmark, preventing its relocation. Knott's version of the Bird Cage Theatre first opened in 1954. Early performances included "Uncle Tom's Cabin" by Whittier College students. Later, vaudeville veterans took over, and the theater hosted talents like Steve Martin and Dean Jones. The real Bird Cage Theatre in Tombstone was known for its wild atmosphere, hosting a saloon, gambling hall, and brothel. A poker game there reportedly lasted eight years, with over $10 million changing hands. The theater also gained notoriety for its many bullet holes and alleged 26 deaths. Walter Knott, born in 1889, started Knott's Berry Farm as a roadside berry stand with his wife, Cordelia, in the 1920s. They sold berries, preserves, and pies. In 1934, Cordelia began serving fried chicken dinners, which became a major attraction. To entertain waiting guests, Walter built a replica Ghost Town in 1940, marking the beginning of the theme park. The Bird Cage Theatre at Knott's has seen various uses over the years, including melodramas, Christmas shows, and special events. For a time, it was also used for employee training and hosted the Bob Baker Marionette Theater. Steve Martin, who performed at the Bird Cage early in his career, expressed his fondness for the theater and hoped it would always be a part of Knott's. Knott's Berry Farm, now owned by Cedar Fair, celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2021. Recent renovations reflect a focus on Walter Knott's original vision and storytelling.
