WhatsApp Rolls Out Group Message History
WhatsApp introduced a new feature allowing group administrators to share up to 100 historical messages with new members. The update, described as highly requested, is designed to help new joiners catch up on recent conversations, which is particularly useful for onboarding into communities or commerce groups.
- This feature aligns with the growth of conversational commerce in India, where nearly 90% of non-metro consumers use WhatsApp as their primary platform for brand discovery and shopping. For a marketplace, this allows new vendors to be onboarded directly into an active and contextual sales environment. - While WhatsApp's 100-message history is new, competitor Telegram has long offered more powerful group features, including the ability for new members to see the entire chat history and support for groups of up to 200,000 members, which are often used for large-scale community-based commerce. - The feature launch follows a strategic partnership between Meta and the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) to digitally upskill 5 lakh MSMEs, partly by enhancing their use of WhatsApp for business. This history-sharing tool can be used to quickly bring vendors up to speed on ONDC-related selling guidelines or co-marketing opportunities discussed in groups. - For marketplaces expanding into Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, where "talk-first" commerce is preferred over traditional apps, this feature helps new vendors understand the local market dynamics and customer queries shared in regional sales groups. - The history sharing is a manual, optional process for the person adding a new member, and it is not retroactive for the entire group's history, which maintains a layer of privacy. When history is shared, a notification is sent to the entire group for transparency. - This update is part of a larger push by WhatsApp to build out its business functionalities in India, which have recently grown to include in-app payments, AI-powered support, and direct calling features for businesses on the platform.
