UK Launches New ETA System
The UK is rolling out a mandatory Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system for all non-UK nationals, including dual citizens traveling on non-UK passports. The digital pre-screening system aims to strengthen border controls and will be fully implemented later this year. Travelers who fail to obtain ETA clearance in advance may face denied boarding or entry to the UK.
- The application for an ETA costs £16 and, if approved, is valid for two years, permitting multiple journeys of up to six months at a time. The government has indicated this fee will rise to £20 in the future. - This system aligns the UK with other countries that have similar digital pre-screening requirements, such as the ESTA in the United States, the eTA in Canada, and the European Union's ETIAS, which is expected to launch in late 2026. - The rollout was phased, beginning with Qatar in October 2023, followed by other Gulf nations in early 2024, and expanding to all other visa-exempt nationalities through 2025. Full enforcement of the system for all required travelers began on February 25, 2026. - British and Irish citizens are exempt from needing an ETA. The requirement is also waived for anyone who already holds a valid UK visa or has permission to live, work, or study in the UK. - Applications are submitted online or via the ‘UK ETA’ mobile app, with a decision typically returned within three working days, although many are approved in minutes. - If an ETA application is refused, the traveler must apply for a standard visa to enter the UK. Reasons for refusal can include past criminal convictions or breaches of immigration law. - Travelers transiting through the UK who must pass through border control are required to have an ETA, but there is a temporary exemption for those who do not pass through passport control while connecting flights. - Airlines and other carriers are responsible for ensuring passengers have the necessary authorization before travel and may face fines for transporting individuals without a valid ETA.
