Beijing Celebrates with Lantern Festival Events
The Lantern Festival is being celebrated across Beijing, marking the fifteenth day of the first lunar month. The traditional festival features a wide variety of cultural activities, light displays, and performances throughout the city.
This year's celebrations showcase a significant integration of technology, with events widely employing AI, holographic projections, mixed reality (MR), and smart sensor technology to create immersive, interactive environments. This shift from static displays to dynamic experiences reflects a broader push to blend traditional culture with digital innovation. A prime example is the Tech Temple Fair at the ZGC (Haidian) International Robot Industrial Park, which features interactive experiences with over 30 different types of intelligent robots and various AI-powered immersive games. This event explicitly links the ancient festival with cutting-edge robotics and artificial intelligence development, areas of intense focus for national standards bodies. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) noted the "AI+" initiative was a key driver in digital life during the 2026 Spring Festival. The holiday period saw mobile internet traffic reach 87.83 million TB, an 18.7% year-over-year increase, with 5G data traffic surging by 39%, underscoring the rapid digital transformation of public life and the robust performance of the nation's 5G infrastructure. Several festival sites are being used to highlight strategic national technology achievements. The Tiangong Lantern Festival at Beijing Expo Park, for instance, features a special space-themed exhibition with models of the Tiangong space station's core module and the Chang'e lunar probe, merging cultural celebration with public engagement on aerospace milestones. The commercial and branding potential of integrating tech and culture is also on display, with the large-scale Zigong Lantern Festival at Wenyu River Park featuring collaborations with brands like Pop Mart and Honor of Kings to create unique tech-infused lantern displays. This fusion of a national intangible cultural heritage with major digital entertainment brands points to new models for intellectual property deployment. The festival is also a component of Beijing's strategy to enhance its role as an international exchange center. During the Spring Festival holiday, bookings for domestic flights on non-Chinese passports saw a nearly 20% year-on-year increase, with Beijing as a top destination. In response, some major events like the Yanqing Dual Lantern Festival now offer bilingual information and international booking channels.
