Fort Lauderdale-Bound Flight Diverted

A Southwest Airlines flight en route to Fort Lauderdale from Nashville was diverted to Atlanta due to a security scare. The FBI found no credible threat after investigation, allowing the flight to continue.

The flight, Southwest 2094, departed Nashville for Fort Lauderdale on Friday evening. Passengers were told to keep their "heads down, hands up" during the unexpected landing at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The incident stemmed from a passenger setting a timer on his phone to mark prayer time during Ramadan, though this was determined to be a misunderstanding. A video circulating online, falsely linked to the incident, actually showed a July 2025 event on an EasyJet flight from London Luton to Glasgow. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, where the flight was diverted, is the world's busiest airport. Flight diversions such as this can significantly impact the efficiency of the receiving airport, disrupting regular operations and increasing workload for ground handling staff. Southwest uses Terminal 1 at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) for all operations. In March 2025, Southwest announced it would be closing its crew base at FLL as part of a cost-reduction phase, affecting approximately 280 flight attendants. Flight diversions can be costly, leading to increased fuel consumption, crew costs, and passenger compensation. Rerouting a long-haul flight can add $6,000 to $7,500 per flight hour.
