Trump: Iran Deal 'Easy' After Khamenei's Death

President Trump claimed that securing a diplomatic agreement with Iran will now be 'easy' following the death of Supreme Leader Khamenei. His optimistic take suggests the power vacuum could create a new opening for negotiations, despite Iran's military establishment remaining largely intact.

The process to select a successor is now initiated, managed by a temporary council including Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian and Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei. The ultimate decision rests with the 88-member Assembly of Experts, a body of senior clerics who are themselves vetted by the hardline Guardian Council. This marks only the second leadership transition since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. The first occurred in 1989 when the Assembly of Experts selected Khamenei to succeed Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a powerful military and economic force, is expected to wield significant influence over the selection of the next leader. The "Iran Deal" mentioned by Trump refers to the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), an agreement between Iran and several world powers, including the United States. This deal placed restrictions on Iran's nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions. In 2018, the Trump administration unilaterally withdrew the United States from the JCPOA, calling it a "terrible" deal and reimposed stringent sanctions on Iran. A year later, Iran began to exceed the uranium enrichment limits set by the agreement. International reaction to Khamenei's death has been divided. China and Russia have condemned the U.S.-Israeli strikes, with Beijing calling it a "cynical violation of all norms of human morality and international law." The United Kingdom's defense secretary stated that "few people will mourn the ayatollah's death," while other nations have urged restraint and de-escalation.
