Coachella dust and road alerts

Weekend 1 of Coachella saw dust storms sweep parts of the festival, a development researchers flagged as a sign of changing regional conditions. (latimes.com) Local authorities also published road closures around the Empire Polo Club for Weekend 2, affecting access for in-person attendees. (sbsun.com)

Coachella’s first weekend was hit by blowing dust, and drivers heading to Weekend 2 face a fresh round of road closures around the Empire Polo Club in Indio. (coachella.com, aqmd.gov, ocregister.com) The 2026 festival is running April 10-12 and April 17-19 at the Empire Polo Club, with Weekend 2 opening Friday, April 17. Coachella’s official site lists the venue at 81-800 Avenue 51 in Indio. (coachella.com, edmidentity.com) South Coast Air Quality Management District issued a windblown dust advisory for the Coachella Valley on April 9, then extended it on April 10 through early April 12, warning that particle pollution could reach “Unhealthy” or worse levels. A second advisory issued April 12 ran through Monday night, with gusts up to 51 miles per hour expected Sunday evening. (aqmd.gov, aqmd.gov, aqmd.gov) That dust warning is about PM10, the coarse particles that get kicked up when strong desert winds lift dirt into the air. South Coast AQMD told people attending outdoor events to cut back on long or intense activity and take more breaks when dust levels rise. (aqmd.gov, aqmd.gov) By midweek, the agency was still warning about more windblown dust ahead of Weekend 2. Its April 15 advisory said gusts could reach 43 miles per hour Wednesday night and 52 miles per hour Thursday night, with “Very Unhealthy” air possible at times in parts of the valley before the warning expired Friday morning. (aqmd.gov) The traffic plan around the festival grounds has been in place for weeks. The City of Indio said Avenue 50 between Monroe Street and Madison Avenue closed March 23 and will stay closed through Monday, May 4. (indio.org) For Weekend 2, local coverage said additional closures and detours are in effect around the Empire Polo Club as tens of thousands of people arrive. The Desert Sun reported that about 40,000 festivalgoers are expected to use shuttles each day, even with major congestion still expected near the venue. (ocregister.com, witness.usatoday.com) La Quinta officials told residents this week that their festival traffic map shows road closures, street impacts, transportation options and alternate routes for the Empire Polo Club weekends. The city repeated that the Avenue 50 closure remains in effect through May 4. (laquintaca.gov) So the practical picture for Friday is simple: festivalgoers are walking into a desert event that has already dealt with dust alerts, and drivers are entering a road network that local agencies have been rerouting since late March. Weekend 2 starts with air-quality warnings just ended and traffic controls still firmly in place. (aqmd.gov, indio.org, coachella.com)
