AI Startup Eyes $2B at $20B Valuation

Reflection AI, a two-year-old developer of open large language models, is reportedly negotiating a $2 billion funding round at a valuation over $20 billion. The massive deal underscores how capital is consolidating around a few top-tier AI infrastructure players with defensible technology.

Reflection AI was founded by former Google DeepMind researchers Misha Laskin and Ioannis Antonoglou. Antonoglou was a key figure in the development of AlphaGo, while Laskin was instrumental in the reinforcement learning for Google's Gemini model. The company has assembled a team with talent from top AI labs like DeepMind, OpenAI, and Meta. The startup is focused on creating autonomous coding agents, with the ultimate goal of achieving superintelligence. Their core product, Asimov, is a code-research agent designed to help engineering teams understand complex codebases by indexing everything from GitHub repositories to Slack conversations. The company's thesis is that automating the process of building and evolving software is a critical step toward more general AI. This latest funding round follows a rapid series of valuation increases for the two-year-old company. In March 2025, Reflection AI raised $130 million across two rounds at a valuation of $555 million. By October 2025, the company had secured a $2 billion Series B led by Nvidia, which valued the company at $8 billion. The company's impressive fundraising is backed by a roster of high-profile investors. Early backers included Sequoia Capital, CRV, and Lightspeed Venture Partners. Later rounds saw participation from Nvidia, LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, and Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang. Reflection AI's trajectory is indicative of a larger trend in the AI sector, where massive amounts of capital are being concentrated in a few leading infrastructure companies. Competitors like OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI have also recently secured multi-billion dollar funding rounds at staggering valuations. This highlights investor confidence in the foundational role these companies are expected to play in the future of technology.
