Instagram Expands to Televisions

Instagram is launching a native television application for Google TV devices. The move will bring Instagram content, including Reels and Stories, into users' living rooms, creating new opportunities for brands to reach audiences on larger screens beyond mobile phones.

- The expansion to Google TV follows an initial test launch exclusively on select Amazon Fire TV devices in the United States in late 2025. - The user interface is designed for a continuous, "lean-back" viewing experience, automatically playing subsequent Reels, which mimics traditional channel surfing rather than mobile scrolling. - In addition to Reels, the television app supports standard photo posts and carousels, with on-screen text and captions resized for readability from a living room viewing distance. - The app allows users to like, view comments, and reshare content directly from the television, maintaining key engagement features from the mobile version. - Up to five user accounts can be added to a single TV, allowing different household members to access their own personalized content feeds. - Instagram head Adam Mosseri stated the move is a direct response to changing user behavior, saying, "If... consumption of these platforms is moving to TV, then we need to move to TV, too," positioning the app to compete with YouTube's dominance in the living room. - Planned future features include the ability to use a smartphone as a remote control and the option to create shared feeds with friends for a co-viewing experience. - While YouTube has successfully integrated its "Shorts" format into its TV app, TikTok's previous television app was ultimately shut down, highlighting the challenges of adapting short-form mobile content for the TV screen.
