BMO, CME & Google Cloud Launch

BMO will be the first bank to offer CME Group’s tokenized cash solution on Google Cloud’s Universal Ledger, enabling near‑real‑time blockchain settlement for cash and derivatives. That institutional plumbing could accelerate TradFi–DeFi interoperability and lower settlement friction for desks that need 24/7 capital efficiency. (investing.com) (ledgerinsights.com)

BMO says the tokenized‑cash instrument will be offered to mutual clients of CME Group and BMO and marketed as an institutional settlement product for regulated financial‑services firms in capital markets and commercial banking, with a planned commercial launch in the second half of 2026 subject to regulatory approval. (markets.ft.com) BMO’s Derek Vernon described the effort as “laying the groundwork for BMO tokenized deposits” for payments and treasury use‑cases, while Google Cloud’s James Tromans said tokenizing cash at CME Clearing will let firms meet margin and settlement obligations in real time. (prnewswire.com) The offering will run on Google Cloud’s Universal Ledger (GCUL), a permissioned, programmable distributed ledger that CME completed an initial integration and testing phase with in March 2025 and said would move to market‑participant testing in 2026. (ledgerinsights.com) BMO and CME list intended workflows as margin, collateral and settlement across 24/7 trading, and the PR notes the roadmap explicitly includes tokenized deposits and programmable cash tools for B2B payments and treasury flows. (prnewswire.com) Regulatory headwinds and enablers are in motion: the CFTC issued guidance and launched a digital‑assets pilot program for tokenized collateral on December 8, 2025 covering assets such as BTC, ETH and USDC, which frames the supervisory pathway U.S. participants will navigate. (cftc.gov) CME has argued GCUL could deliver material efficiencies for collateral, margin and fee payments as markets move toward continuous trading, and BMO/CME say the joint solution aims to free up capital that would otherwise be tied to traditional banking cycles.
