Dark Creators Return with HBO Thriller
Lisa Vicari from Netflix's 'DARK' is reuniting with the show's creators for a new HBO Max thriller series based on 'Struwwelpeter,' reimagined with ritual murders. The announcement exploded on social media with 3,654 likes, 360 reposts, and 210k views, signaling massive anticipation for high-concept European suspense.
The new series from 'Dark' creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar will adapt the 10 gruesome cautionary tales from the 1845 German children's book 'Struwwelpeter'. The project is described as a "cruel reality" thriller and family drama that explores themes of punishment and forgiveness. Production is currently underway in Germany for the as-yet-untitled HBO Max series. The story will shift focus from the book's child characters to adults, following a federal investigator solving a series of ritualistic murders inspired by the dark tales. This project marks a move to HBO for Friese and bo Odar's production company, Dark Ways. Their previous multilingual mystery series, '1899', was canceled by Netflix after one season, despite developing a cult following and receiving generally favorable reviews. The source material, 'Struwwelpeter' (or "Shock-headed Peter"), contains stories with grim consequences for misbehaving children. One of the most famous tales involves a tailor cutting off the thumbs of a boy who won't stop sucking them.
