Waymo Targets 1 Million Weekly Rides

Waymo's Co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana stated the company aims to reach one million weekly paid autonomous rides in 2026, more than doubling current volumes. The expansion will involve adding new vehicle models and scaling operations in cities like San Francisco, where the company's AI Driver is already handling complex conditions like fog. The aggressive target signals growing confidence in both the technology and its commercial viability.

- To reach its goal, Waymo is expanding its service to over 20 new cities in 2026, including international launches in London and Tokyo. Domestically, the company plans to launch in Dallas, Miami, Nashville, and Washington, D.C., and begin testing in several other locations. - The company's current fleet of approximately 2,500 vehicles, primarily electric Jaguar I-PACEs, will be supplemented with new models. These additions include electric vehicles from Chinese automaker Zeekr and Hyundai Ioniq 5s. - Waymo has established a partnership with Magna International to retrofit these vehicles with its autonomous driving technology at a facility in Mesa, Arizona. - The company's valuation reached $126 billion after a recent $16 billion funding round, with Alphabet contributing $13 billion, to fuel this expansion and enhance cost-efficiency. - In terms of safety, an analysis by Swiss Re of 25.3 million autonomous miles found Waymo vehicles had an 88% reduction in property damage claims and a 92% reduction in bodily injury claims compared to human drivers. - Waymo is also collaborating with Toyota to explore the integration of its autonomous technology into personally-owned vehicles, signaling a potential future business line beyond ride-hailing. - To advance research in the field, Waymo makes a large-scale autonomous driving dataset available to the public and hosts annual challenges with cash prizes to spur innovation in areas like motion prediction and 3D object detection. - Waymo partners with ride-hailing companies like Uber and Lyft, allowing users in certain cities to request a Waymo vehicle through those familiar apps.
