Social Distortion Returns After 15 Years
Social Distortion announced their first album in 15 years, "Born To Kill," with the title track now streaming. The legendary punk/alt-rock band's return marks a major comeback for the California group known for their blend of punk energy and rockabilly influences. The announcement has generated significant excitement among longtime fans and the broader alternative music community.
- The band's previous studio album, "Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes," was released on January 18, 2011, making the gap between records over 15 years. That album was their first to feature the current rhythm section of bassist Brent Harding and drummer David Hidalgo Jr. - The creation of "Born To Kill" was delayed in June 2023 when frontman and sole original member Mike Ness was diagnosed with stage one tonsil cancer. Following successful surgery, Ness returned to recording and touring. - The new album will be released on Epitaph Records and was co-produced by Ness and Dave Sardy. It features guest appearances from Benmont Tench of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and singer-songwriter Lucinda Williams. - The album's cover art was created by Mike Ness in collaboration with well-known artist Shepard Fairey. Lyrical influences for the title track reportedly include Lou Reed, Iggy and the Stooges, and David Bowie. - While the band hasn't released an album since 2011, its members have pursued other projects. Ness released two solo albums, "Cheating at Solitaire" and "Under the Influences," in 1999, and guitarist Jonny Wickersham released a solo record called "Salvation Town" in 2014. - The current lineup has been stable for over a decade, featuring Mike Ness, Jonny Wickersham (rhythm guitar, since 2000), Brent Harding (bass, since 2005), and David Hidalgo Jr. (drums, since 2010). - Social Distortion has announced an extensive tour in support of the new album, including a run of European dates in June 2026 and a U.S. tour with Descendents and The Chats scheduled for the fall of 2026.
