Meta Sunsets On-Prem WhatsApp API for Cloud
Meta has officially sunsetted its WhatsApp On-Premises API, directing all users to its Cloud API. The company cited superior performance, easier scaling, and an improved developer experience as key drivers for the decision. The move reflects a broader industry trend away from complex self-hosted deployments in favor of managed cloud services.
- The final supported version of the On-Premise API client expired on October 23, 2025, with new feature development for the platform ceasing as early as January 9, 2024. After July 1, 2024, new business phone numbers could only be registered for the Cloud API. - From a performance perspective, the Cloud API offers up to 1,000 messages per second, a four-fold increase over the On-Premises API's 250 mps throughput. Meta also targets 99.9% uptime and a 99th percentile latency of under 5 seconds for the cloud service. - For developers, the Cloud API eliminates the need to deploy, host, and manage API containers, as all maintenance, scaling, and upgrades are handled automatically by Meta. This has led to some partners reporting infrastructure cost reductions of over 90% after migrating. - Future-facing features such as emoji reactions, and upcoming capabilities like Payments, Calling, and Groups, are exclusive to the Cloud API, creating a strong incentive for migration beyond operational efficiency. - Coinciding with this transition, WhatsApp is overhauling its pricing model effective July 1, 2025, moving from a conversation-based fee to a simpler per-message pricing structure. This change is intended to provide more transparent and predictable costs. - The Cloud API is built on the Facebook Graph API, whereas the legacy On-Premises API utilized a REST API protocol. Meta manages all certificate authorities for the Cloud API, except for the developer's own webhook server certificate. - This API consolidation aligns with a broader strategic move by Meta to control the platform's evolution; starting January 15, 2026, WhatsApp's Business API policy will prohibit the use of general-purpose AI chatbots from third-party providers.
