Shopify Launches AI Store Builder

Shopify has released an AI Store Builder, allowing retailers to use large language models and generative AI for product recommendations, inventory planning, and personalization. The company also published a framework for quantifying the return on AI investments, advising businesses to map technical metrics like model accuracy directly to revenue drivers such as conversion and retention.

- The AI capabilities are delivered through a suite of tools called "Shopify Magic," which includes a conversational AI assistant named "Sidekick". This assistant integrates into the store's dashboard to analyze data, generate reports, and execute tasks based on natural language prompts. - Shopify's AI Store Builder, released as part of its Summer '25 "Editions" update, can generate three distinct, editable storefront layouts from a few descriptive keywords. The system is built on a new theme foundation called "Horizon," which uses modular, AI-generatable "Theme Blocks" for customization without coding. - For developers, the Sidekick assistant can be integrated with third-party applications via app extensions. This allows the AI to search and use data from other business tools, enabling more complex workflows and a more integrated data stack. - The underlying AI is trained specifically on e-commerce best practices, focusing on creating functional layouts for product discovery, customer trust, and high-conversion checkout experiences. Beyond design, its text generation tools can create SEO-optimized product descriptions, blog posts, and email subject lines. - Shopify is positioning this technology as a new commerce channel, introducing the concept of "Agentic Storefronts". This model allows AI assistants to access live, structured product data like real-time inventory and pricing to act on recommendations and potentially complete transactions within the AI interface itself. - The AI extends to operational logistics by powering predictive inventory management. By analyzing sales data, market trends, and other variables, the system aims to optimize stock levels, reduce overstocking, and prevent stockouts. - According to Shopify's product team, the Sidekick assistant can reduce the time required for initial store setup by up to 40% for new merchants. - The personalization capabilities reflect a broader industry trend where AI-driven recommendations have a significant impact on revenue. For context, 35% of Amazon's sales in 2021 were attributed to its AI-powered recommendation engine.
